Marie-François Goron (1847-1933) — French soldier from 1865, and police officer from 1881, eventually head of the Sûreté, best known for Les Memoires de M Goron: Ancien Chef de la Sûreté ["Memoires of Monsieur Goron: Former Head of the Sûreté"] (1897). With Émile Gautier, he wrote the Fleur de Bagne sequence – Fleur de Bagne, roman contemporain (1901 Le Journal; 1902 3vols; trans Brian Stableford as Spawn of the Penitentiary: Volume 1: From Devil's Island to the City of Lights 2013 pod, Volume 2: Cosmopolitan Pirates 2013 pod, and Volume 3: Scientific Detectives and Bandits 2013), in which an amoral master criminal, armed with a supply of base metals transmuted into gold – supplied to him by a naive anarchist Scientist – takes over Paris, aided by a heavier-than-air flying machine.
