Tim Wynne-Jones

Биография

Tim Wynne-Jones (born 12 August, 1948) is an English–Canadian author of children's literature. His works include "Some of the Kinder Planets", "Mischief City" and "The Maestro". He has also written three adult novels.

Born in Cheshire, England, Wynne-Jones was raised in British Columbia and Ontario, educated at the University of Waterloo and York University. He currently lives in eastern Ontario. He is a faculty member at Vermont College of Fine Arts, teaching in the Writing for Children and Young Adults MFA program.

A multi‐talented creator, Wynne‐Jones has crafted radio plays, the lyrics for a science‐fiction musical, the book and libretto for an opera, and popular songs. He made his children's book debut as a picture‐book writer, when he began chronicling the adventures of Zoom, a cat who followed his seafaring uncle. His short stories, including those published in The Book of Changes and Some of the Kinder Planets, have won numerous awards; they are distinguished by plotlines pared to essentials, emotional truth, and quirky, contemporary, characters. Although reflecting everyday problems such as bullies, hockey‐playing, and making money, the stories often include fantastical elements, corkscrew logic, and an off‐centre point of view. His version of ‘The Goose Girl’, published in Datlow and Windling's Black Thorn, White Rose, focuses on the story from the viewpoint of the prince. He finds himself fatally drawn to the voluptuous servant girl, the false bride and impostor, rather than the true princess. Departing from the Grimms' version, in which the false bride forces the princess to switch places, Wynne‐Jones shows the two girls changing places for a lark, the princess herself being quite young and ill‐prepared, sexually, to become anyone's wife. As the tale comes to its grisly end, for this particular prince life with a true princess proves to be not such a happily‐ever‐after reality.
